Process from the making space workshop which began on Saturday the 31st of March with a discussion and collaborative collage session (with Karin Tan, Isaac Zavale, Mini Ngoyi, Syke Quadling, Nathan Gates and Georgia Munnik).

MAKING SPACE - IPP WORKSHOP

The IPP will be hosting a workshop titled ‘making space’ over the next few weeks starting this Saturday 31 March at 10:30 am sharp. Following the intro, the programme will run every Friday and Saturday until 21 April. 

‘Making space’ is about using the physical or virtual space of a publication as a space for critical thought, experimentation and play. The aim of the workshop is to introduce a small group of students to independent publishing as an artistic or creative strategy. The workshop will facilitate each student’s creation of a personal or collaborative space through the development of a publishable form or structure. Focused loosely on small-scale print and online publishing, students will interact with a range of different strategies employed by different practitioners – from self-broadcasting to real-time archiving to book binding and layout. 


The workshop will be supported by guest participants CUSS (Zamani Xolo, Ravi Govender, Nikki Comninos & Jamal Nxedlana), Rangoato Hlasane, Sebastian Borckenhagen, Josh and Jared Ginsburg and Mark Kannemeyer. 


WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:

Saturday 31 March: 10:30—14:00: WORKSHOP INTRO with Jonah Sack and Francis Burger (IPP facilitators). 

10:30—11:30 Introductory session

11:30—12:00 Visual research and reading time within IPP library

12:00—13:00 Break

13:00—14:00 Group discussion

14:00—15:00 OPTIONAL individual consultation about ideas


BRING pens/pencils and paper plus any previous works, zines, publications etc…

The remaining workshop dates are each following Friday and Saturday from 10:30 to 18:00, with compulsory contact times from 10:30—16:00 – so that’s 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 of April.

Guest participants will conduct either morning or afternoon sessions consisting of a half to one hour presentation of their work and a 2 hour + session consulting with individual students who are interested.

All workshop contact will be hosted at the Goethe-Institut head office on Jan Smuts Ave.

The IPP & 'This is your place'

The IPP interacted with a workshop during March titled 'This is your place', run by Bettina Malcomess, Dorothee Kreutzfeldt and Puleng Plessie with learners from New Model High School. The students produced photocopied booklets with maps, interviews and songs composed in response to the area around their school (Jeppestown and City & Suburban).
   

After a short recap of the student's work from the previous week and a show and tell of the IPP, the students separated into groups to walk different routes through the area. We walked in the rapidly developing Maboneng precinct with Bettina, Cynthia, Puleng, Thandekile & Musa. Bettina led the way to a building with a basement submerged under water. Thandekile recognised the relative of Khulekani "Mgqumeni" Khumalo (a popular  maskandi singer who died in 2009 but was recently the subject of a hoax reincarnation by Sibusiso Gcabashe).

'This is your place' was part of an ongoing exhibition by Malcomess and Kreutzfeldt (deadheat) titled Not No Place at Goethe on Main (Arts on Main - 245 Main Street, City and Suburban, JHB) 24 March - 14 April 2012.

The Independent Publishing Project at the Goethe-Institut Library 15 March - 26 April 2012

A second public iteration of the Independent Publishing Project, produced in partnership with the Goethe-Institut South Africa*, will be running at the Goethe-Institut library on Jan Smuts avenue from the 15th of March until the 26th of April.

Begun in 2011, the IPP is a research initiative aimed at gathering people and objects around the idea of self or small-scale publishing in a South African context.

Focusing on collaboration and conversation among contemporary practitioners the exhibition will feature a select reading room and a working studio. Guest participants to occupy the space include Josh Ginsburg, Rangoato Hlasane, Mark Kannemeyer, CUSS (Ravi Govender, Jamal Nxedlana, Nikki Comninos and Zamani Xolo), and Sebastian Borckenhagen, amongst others.

The project will develop within the space over six weeks, culminating with a combined event showcasing new works, an IPP broadsheet and the screening of CUSS’s Johannesburg focused webisode (see the Durban version here). The event will take place on the 24th of April at 18:30 at the Goethe-Institut.

A small introductory gathering for participants and others interested in the project will be held on the 15th of March at 18:30.

The exhibition run will be dotted with two-day intensive workshops run by the facilitators and artist participants. We'll start publicizing workshop      and other event info from the 26th of March, 2012.
