MAKING SPACE - IPP WORKSHOP

The IPP will be hosting a workshop titled ‘making space’ over the next few weeks starting this Saturday 31 March at 10:30 am sharp. Following the intro, the programme will run every Friday and Saturday until 21 April. 

‘Making space’ is about using the physical or virtual space of a publication as a space for critical thought, experimentation and play. The aim of the workshop is to introduce a small group of students to independent publishing as an artistic or creative strategy. The workshop will facilitate each student’s creation of a personal or collaborative space through the development of a publishable form or structure. Focused loosely on small-scale print and online publishing, students will interact with a range of different strategies employed by different practitioners – from self-broadcasting to real-time archiving to book binding and layout. 


The workshop will be supported by guest participants CUSS (Zamani Xolo, Ravi Govender, Nikki Comninos & Jamal Nxedlana), Rangoato Hlasane, Sebastian Borckenhagen, Josh and Jared Ginsburg and Mark Kannemeyer. 


WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:

Saturday 31 March: 10:30—14:00: WORKSHOP INTRO with Jonah Sack and Francis Burger (IPP facilitators). 

10:30—11:30 Introductory session

11:30—12:00 Visual research and reading time within IPP library

12:00—13:00 Break

13:00—14:00 Group discussion

14:00—15:00 OPTIONAL individual consultation about ideas


BRING pens/pencils and paper plus any previous works, zines, publications etc…

The remaining workshop dates are each following Friday and Saturday from 10:30 to 18:00, with compulsory contact times from 10:30—16:00 – so that’s 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 of April.

Guest participants will conduct either morning or afternoon sessions consisting of a half to one hour presentation of their work and a 2 hour + session consulting with individual students who are interested.

All workshop contact will be hosted at the Goethe-Institut head office on Jan Smuts Ave.

General project info

THE INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING PROJECT, facilitated by Jonah Sack and Francis Burger. September 8th to October 1st, 2011, at Blank Projects, Woodstock, Cape Town.

The Independent Publishing Project is aimed at gathering people and objects around the idea of self or small-scale publishing within South Africa. Functioning as an installation in two parts, the project will run at Blank Projects in September 2011 as both an interactive exhibition of collected works and a working studio aimed at producing new collaborative publications.

Combining contemporary and historical examples, the books, booklets, zines, take-aways and leaflets collected through the project advocate independent publishing as a first rather than a last resort. Looking at independent or small-scale publishing as both a medium and a strategy, our interest in these items is part sentimental, part tactile and part political. Consumable but not commodified, these works traverse closely-knit networks as if by word of mouth, existing as intimate instruments of personal agency and freedom of thought. They create a space.

They’re also just good to carry around, to look or read, and to think about.

Additional participation is encouraged and welcomed. 

General call for participation

We’re seeking participation in the following ways:

1. Networking- pointing us in the direction of people who are up to these sorts of things, have been in the past, or want to be in the near future. 

2. Working with us and others in the space - working across disciplines (independently or collaboratively) on publication oriented projects within the space during the exhibition run.

3. Collecting - we’re collecting items in two parts, firstly from practitioners who have their own works to be exhibited as part of the exhibition, and secondly from interested parties who have personal collections that they’re willing to share in part (aimed at loaning items that have had a personal impact, things that arrest or speak to you and advocate the idea of independent publishing in some or other way, basically, instructive objects that will enthuse/inspire/excite/agitate).
